Gary Leatherman

With more than 35 years of experience in the energy sector, Dr. Leatherman helped shape the thinking of industry and governments around the world on critical energy issues, including greenhouse gas reduction, renewables, system planning, distributed energy resources, microgrids and transactive energy/energy marketplaces. Most recently, he helped several Fortune 500 industrials obtain hundreds of millions of dollars in federal grants to support decarbonization and onshoring of manufacturing capacity.
Dr. Leatherman’s other notable assignments include developing a carbon capture and storage strategy for an oil major, developing a net-zero carbon energy strategy for a major university, conducting a green hydrogen feasibility study for a major U.S. refiner and leading a market/technical due diligence that led to IFM’s successful purchase of Enwave’s district energy systems in Canada. He has worked with clients in various industries, including electric utilities, private equity and infrastructure funds, industrials and state and local governments.
Prior to joining A&M, Dr. Leatherman spent 20 years in management consulting serving most recently as Managing Director with Baker Tilly in Washington, D.C. He also worked with Booz Allen Hamilton. In addition to helping clients obtain significant federal funding around decarbonization and onshoring manufacturing capability, Dr. Leatherman has been instrumental in helping clients successfully consummate public-private partnerships with major universities around their campus utility systems, supported successful efforts to purchase billions of dollars of energy assets through due diligence, and helped clients achieve energy resilience and decarbonization goals through technoeconomic analysis of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.
Dr. Leatherman earned a bachelor’s degree in materials engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University and a Ph.D. in materials engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
