Trump Slashes Emissions Policies. For 6 Automakers, California Still Makes the Rules
Although California’s authority to set its own, stricter vehicle emissions standards was recently revoked, six major automakers — including BMW, Honda, Ford, and Stellantis — have pledged to follow the state’s guidelines through 2026 and beyond.
California expects all signatories to honor these commitments, which continue to influence emissions policy far beyond its borders. With federal climate regulations facing potential rollbacks, including challenges to EPA rules, these agreements have become the primary emissions benchmark for participating automakers — a move that reflects both strategic foresight and deliberate brand positioning.
Brian Irwin, Managing Director, notes that most OEMs can meet these heightened requirements by adjusting their product and powertrain mix, rather than making costly bespoke investments:
“These agreements allowed companies to show that they are progressive and technologically capable of meeting the higher standards, which could have a positive halo effect on the brand, while also avoiding public disputes with states.”
