Funding Social and Emotional Supports in K-12 School Districts
Expanding School-based Social and Emotional Supports: Focus on Funding and Outcomes
In response to the heightened need from the pandemic, many states have recently relied on Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds to pay for school-based supports (SBS) dedicated to addressing students’ mental health and wellbeing. ESSER funds are set to expire in the fall of 2024, and therefore are not a long term solution. To implement robust, innovative and sustainable school-based support models, school districts must strategically assess and leverage available resources.
A&M Managing Director Erin Covington, Director Mathew Smith and Manager Abigail Snyder discuss how districts can expand social and emotional supports for students.
Three strategies to consider:
- Prioritize district budget to invest in school-based supports
- Collaborate more effectively with community providers
- Access available funding and resources
