Matt Brouwer is a Senior Director with Alvarez & Marsal’s North American Commercial Restructuring practice in Nashville. He brings more than twelve years of accounting and financial experience advising clients in Canada and the U.S.

Mr. Brouwer provides advisory services to debtors, lending syndicates and official committees of unsecured creditors in bankruptcy proceedings, focusing on implementing strategies to maximize creditor recoveries and develop and evaluate financial models, business reviews and stakeholder negotiations. He also has extensive experience with court appointments in Canada under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA), the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (BIA) and cross-border CCAA and Chapter 11 filings in a wide variety of industries including retail, construction, and manufacturing.

Mr. Brouwer’s most recent experience includes representing the official committees of unsecured creditors in the Chapter 11 proceedings of Bed Bath & Beyond, Mallinckrodt plc, Clovis Oncology Inc. and Alto Maipo. He has also recently acted as lender advisor to conduct a comprehensive business plan and cash-flow forecast review of a health care company significantly impacted by COVID-19. 

Previously, Mr. Brouwer acted as a company advisor for the successful turnaround of a global commodities business, evaluating strategic options, developing a 13-week cash-flow model, developing and evaluating a business plan, negotiating with senior lenders, and implementing various operational and working capital improvements. He also acted as company advisor to a large retail company in Canada while they underwent a global restructuring that included filing for CCAA in Canada and Chapter 11 in the United States and having a successful going concern sale of the Canadian operations.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Brouwer spent over five years with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Toronto, serving as Manager in the Corporate Advisory and Restructuring Group.

Mr. Brouwer earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce (with honors) from Dalhousie University. He is a Chartered Professional Accountant and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (CA, CPA), a Canadian Licensed Insolvency Trustee (LIT), a Chartered Insolvency and Restructuring Professional (CIRP), a member of the Turnaround Management Association and a member of the Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals (CAIRP).
