In this Q&A, Dairon shares how immigrating from Cuba to the U.S. shaped his resilience and perspective, the experiences that have influenced his career growth, and why trust and dependability are essential in leadership. He also reflects on the impact of mentorship, his excitement about returning to A&M, and how his passion for tennis helps him maintain balance in a demanding profession.

Building Resilience Through Life's Challenges

How did immigrating at age 15 from Cuba to the U.S. shape your personal and professional life?

Immigrating at any age is challenging but doing so as a teenager came with unique obstacles. I’m naturally talkative, but not knowing English made it incredibly difficult at first to communicate and connect with others. That experience gave me perspective — it reminds me that challenges are temporary, and that perseverance can lead to success.  I have a deep appreciation for the opportunities I’ve had, from building a life in this country to pursuing my education and career at A&M.

Looking back, was there a defining moment or experience in your life or career that significantly influenced your professional growth?

I often find myself wondering who I would be if I hadn’t taken that 45-minute flight. The truth is, I don’t know — but I do know that my life would be very different and, almost certainly, not better. Sometimes, just 45 minutes can be enough to change the rest of your life for good.

Working with very talented professionals at all levels has been invaluable to my growth. I still remember when I first joined the firm, looking up to the Miami partners and thinking, one day, I want to be like them.

Importance of Trust and Dependability in Financial Consulting

Has your experience in financial consulting and tax advisory shaped your approach to client management at A&M?

After nearly a decade at A&M, I’ve learned that consistently demonstrating support builds trust and fosters long-term client relationships. When clients see your commitment, they not only appreciate it but also turn to you for future opportunities.

Is there one skill or quality that you consider most essential for success?

It’s dependability. In our highly collaborative field, being reliable is essential to delivering exceptional results.

Why Mentorship Matters at Alvarez & Marsal

What influenced your decision to return to A&M, and what excites you about this new chapter?

There were two things. First and foremost, it’s the people at A&M. But the engaging nature of the work also drew me. It’s exciting to collaborate with talented professionals and contribute to the firm’s growth while continuing to grow alongside it.

As someone who thrives on challenges, what aspects of your role at A&M push you to keep growing?

The partners and my mentors at A&M both challenge and encourage me, and this has shaped my growth as a well-rounded professional. Their guidance has been instrumental in developing my leadership style and approach to problem-solving. I find it very motivating to be in a position to drive the firm’s success and create pathways for others to join and thrive at A&M.

Outside of work, how do you balance family life, your love for tennis, and your passion for sports cars?

A&M offers the flexibility I need to be present for my family while also pursuing my personal interests. Tennis provides a much-needed physical outlet for stress relief. Tennis is competitive and skill-testing, but it’s fun. Tennis helps me stay balanced, especially during long and challenging weeks.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career change or returning to a former employer?

Take time to reflect and assess the opportunity with a clear head. Emotion-driven decisions may not always be the best long-term choice.
